3. Hire David Griffin as a Front office Consultant to help with Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka’s development

It sounds like I’m rebuilding the 2016 Cleveland Cavaliers. but hear me out. Just like any NBA player, front office members need to develop, learn and hone their craft. Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka were both remarkably successful people at their previous professions but have some things to learn about their new positions.

Magic Johnson, who has dominated the basketball world as a player, has been an incredibly successful entrepreneur and is part owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Rob Pelinka was one of the best sports agents in the business with superstar clientele including Andre Drummond, Buddy Hield, Eric Gordon, Andre Iguodala, Dion Waiters, James Harden and Kobe Bryant, not to mention owning his own sports agency: Landmark Sports Agency.

With that level of success under your belt, it is very understandable that Magic and Pelinka felt they could run the Lakers front office without help. But, they have been exposed by the likes of the San Antonio Spurs, Indiana Pacers and most recently the New Orleans Pelicans for lacking the nuances of working in a front office.

They need someone in their corner who has been there, done that and has the t-shirt. They could have had that in Jerry West but that time has since passed. Griffin could very easily be picked up by another team as their general manager but if he is available and willing, he would be a fantastic person to have part of the front office in any capacity.

Not only does Griffin have the experience to help, but he has also built a rapport with different organizations across the NBA via trade talks, contract negotiations and just being in the league for a period of time. This could really help Magic and Pelinka grow.
