Recent Los Angeles Lakers rumors have revolved around the head coaching position, and Jeanie Buss reportedly won’t interfere in whatever decision Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka make.

There have been numerous Los Angeles Lakers rumors involving the team’s head coaching position. Luke Walton is still employed as the head coach, but there seems to be an overwhelming feeling that Walton will not be retained following the end of the season.

Despite Walton still being the head coach, Lakers rumors have swirled about the position. Jason Kidd has been mentioned as a potential replacement. In addition, Tyronn Lue has been mentioned as another potential candidate.

Of those two, Lue is the better candidate. He knows what it takes to have success coaching a LeBron James-led team. Lue was the Cleveland Cavaliers head coach when they defeated the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals in 2016. He coached them into the Finals the following two years as well but was fired after six games this season.

Kidd’s departure from the Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks should be a cause for concern. He angled for a bigger role with the Nets, didn’t receive it and left for the Bucks. Milwaukee fired him after the 2017-18 season after consecutive first-round exits. Now, the Bucks have the best record in the NBA.

While there has been a lot of chatter of Walton being removed as head coach, he had the most important person in his corner; Jeanie Buss.

As controlling owner of the Lakers, Buss has some say over the decision making process. She reportedly helped push Magic Johnson toward drafting Lonzo Ball over De’Aaron Fox, whom Johnson reportedly has his eye on.

Buss has remained in Walton’s corner, saying he had faith in him still. That is the best ally Walton could have, but he may be losing her from his corner. According to Bill Oram of The Athletic, Buss won’t interfere in any decision making that Johnson and Rob Pelinka have.

While Buss has backed Walton, Buss let it be known that she will allow the front office to make a change if they see fit.

While it is smart for Buss to allow Johnson and Pelinka to do their jobs, if she truly believes that Walton is the right person for the job, she should voice that. Thus far, the options that have been discussed do not represent much of an upgrade.

Walton has his shortcomings, but when given a full allotment of players, the Lakers succeeded. The team won 15 of the 23 games that James, Lonzo Ball and Brandon Ingram all played in. The team was in fourth place in the Western Conference before James went down with a groin injury.

While this season was a disappointment, the blame cannot be placed solely on Walton. Firing him as the scapegoat seems likely, but it is not necessarily the correct move.
