As the Los Angeles Lakers continue their quest to add another star to LeBron James and Anthony Davis, the fans are being a bit too picky.

The Los Angeles Lakers have been talking about getting another star player to pair with LeBron James for quite a while now. They look to have accomplished that with Anthony Davis, but they could add another one.

We see the list of top-tier free agents on TV every day. Many analysts and fans point to a small handful of players that they believe will get the Lakers back in contention.

Imagine for a moment it’s the summer of 2017. The Lakers are still reeling after Kobe Bryant‘s departure, and nobody has any idea that LeBron James will soon be a Laker. The team needed star power. The Lakers front office, and fans alike, would be ecstatic if they were able to land Jimmy Butler as a free agent.

Fast forward to the summer of 2019. LeBron James has been on the team for a whole season, and the Lakers missed the playoffs for the SIXTH year in a row. Everybody wants the team to land a big free agent, and now Jimmy Butler isn’t good enough? Are you kidding me?

Obviously, there are better options, with this summer having a very strong free agent class. Kawhi Leonard and Kyrie Irving top the list of the best players the Purple & Gold could possibly sign. But, most people seem to believe none of the top-tier free agents will come to LA unless it’s to play for the Clippers.

So, let’s say the Lakers miss out on Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson, Kawhi Leonard, and Kyrie Irving. Would that mean the team will fail again next season? NO!

There are other free agents that would still improve the team immensely. Guys like Kemba Walker, Khris Middleton, DeMarcus Cousins, and Jimmy Butler could be available.

Every time I hear someone bring up Jimmy Butler, they don’t seem to think he’s the guy that can help get the team back to the promised land. But, not long ago, they probably would’ve been thrilled to see him in Purple & Gold.

All this talk of the Lakers needing another superstar player is nonsense. The 2018-19 season was a failure because of injuries and a failed trade attempt. The roster was flawed but not as bad as it’s been made out to be.

With LeBron, Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, and Kyle Kuzma, the Lakers already have a team capable of contending in the West. They were in 4th place in the West before all the injuries and would have easily made the playoffs.

Next time you hear that the Lakers are doomed if they don’t sign someone like Kevin Durant or Kawhi Leonard, think again. If the team had been healthy, they would already be in the playoffs. The team does need some more help, but even a “second-tier” guy like Jimmy Butler would be all the Lakers need.
