It is being reported Los Angeles Lakers center DeMarcus Cousins tore his ACL in a workout, but the team should not be worried.

DeMarcus Cousins inked a fresh deal with the Los Angeles Lakers in July, agreeing to a one-year deal worth $3.5 million.

This is not Cousins’ first career injury, but that should give the Lakers‘ confidence.

Per reports, Cousins was playing basketball and had to leave the court early after possibly bumping knees with another player. While he is still pending a meeting with the Lakers’ medical staff, test results confirm the tear in his left ACL.

Typically, NBA sources release information within moments of it happening. Confirming or speculating potential injuries rarely takes multiple days to report, especially for high-profile players like DeMarcus Cousins.

And while the Lakers have been slower to release information this offseason, such as pre-draft workouts, Cousins’ injury history should give the Lakers’ confidence that he will return promptly.

Cousins has suffered three major injuries during his 9-year NBA career. In 2018, on the New Orleans Pelicans, he ruptured his Achilles versus the Houston Rockets. After undergoing surgery, the recovery ended his season.

However, he was able to return nearly 11 months later on the Golden State Warriors. While the recovery time was extensive, he returned just as aggressive and productive as before. His stats reflect less success in nearly every category, however, he played fewer minutes as a role player on the loaded Warriors’ roster.

Cousins was then plagued again with an injury, after tearing his quad muscle in the 2019 playoffs. He rested, recovered, and made it back by Game 1 of the NBA Finals. Now he is faced with a potential torn ACL.

The downside of this recent injury is the brevity of Cousins’ contract. With only one year signed to the Lakers, and the typical recovery time of a torn ACL (2-6 months), he may miss a significant portion of the season.

The upside is, Cousins has proven time and again that he can and will return from this injury. Luckily, this is a new injury for him, so he won’t be dealing with prior scar tissue. Additionally, as it went viral, Cousins was in arguably the best shape of his career. Being ‘Skinny Boogie’ will give him the edge he needs to recover quickly and efficiently.

A torn ACL is one of the more serious injuries for a basketball player, but with Cousins’ history of recovery and his current health, the Lakers will have him back on the court fouling out in no time.
