Los Angeles Lakers: 3 free-agent guards to sign before Isaiah Thomas
By Jason Reed
1. Avery Bradley
The ironic part about the Los Angeles Lakers reportedly weighing the possibility of signing Isaiah Thomas is the fact that he is a former Laker. He would be the fifth former Laker that the team brought back in free agency this season to continue the trend that Rob Pelinka established.
The Lakers can continue the trend of signing former Lakers and get a better guard in the process in Avery Bradley. Bradley did not have the best season last year as he signed with the Miami Heat and then was traded to the Houston Rockets but that is a good thing.
It has tanked his value back to that of a minimum player. That is what happened to Bradley before he signed with the Lakers, where he increased his value on the open market. There is unfinished business for Bradley in LA and he can build himself a market once more.
Bradley and Thomas were teammates during Thomas’ peak in Boston and while Thomas was the better player because of his scoring prowess, Bradley’s defense has always been better and is a big part of the reason why Thomas was able to succeed offensively as much as he did.
That is what would be so important to the Lakers. The Lakers do not really need another scorer, they need someone who can play serviceable defense and hit spot-up shots when called upon. Thomas is not even a guarantee to be good at the latter and he certainly is not doing the former.
