James Ennis has been one of the players tied up in the Los Angeles Lakers rumors as the team looks to fill out its roster. The Lakers currently only have 12 players under contract and NBA insider Marc Stein reported that Ennis was someone who the Lakers were considering.
Ennis is not the only player that the Lakers are considering. Former Laker Isaiah Thomas was also mentioned in the initial Stein report and the Lakers have worked out two other point guards as well. Both Mike James and Darren Collison have been worked out by LA.
There are no reports of the Lakers working out James Ennis, which could seem like a bad omen for his potential future with the team. However, Ennis’ activity on Twitter and the tweets he is liking could tell a different story.
The tweets above were not the only ones he liked that included the Lakers. There were several more tweets about joining the Lakers that Ennis liked. Overall, there were two types of tweets that he was going out of his way to acknowledge: those asking him to sign with the Lakers and those thanking him for his time in Orlando and wishing him luck.
It would be great if the Los Angeles Lakers rumors around James Ennis led to a signing.
The point guards that the Los Angeles Lakers worked out are all interesting. There is certainly a lot to say about Isaiah Thomas, Darren Collison has his pros and cons and Mike James would be a downright bad signing.
Ennis is not a perfect free-agent target but he is the best that the Lakers can realistically do at this point in time. While he is a bit roster redundant with the players already signed, Ennis adds wing depth to the Lakers and is a legitimate three and D guy.
He is not an elite three and D role player but that is the two things he offers to a contender. He can shoot the three-point shot at an efficient rate and can play serviceable defense that would be maximized by Frank Vogel.
Quite frankly, Ennis could be better for the Lakers than Wesley Matthews was last season. While Ennis would have to really shine in LA, it is not completely out of the realm of possibility that he could play himself into the crunch time lineup as an off-ball shooter and defensive piece.
None of the three point guards project to be a crunch time lineup option, so to get that out of a signing at this point in the offseason is huge.
As it currently stands, though, James Ennis’ connection to the team is nothing more than Los Angeles Lakers rumors. Hopefully, they start to pick up more steam and we see it turn from rumor to reality.
