The Los Angeles Lakers have been without Anthony Davis for just over two weeks and his absence has been more than apparent. Los Angeles is 3-5 in eight games without AD and with the schedule getting tougher after the turn of the new year, that record could start to slide.

The timeline for AD to return has been foggy with fans getting some sort of clarity from Shams Charania earlier this week. At the absolute earliest, the Lakers could be getting Davis back by mid-January.

Davis himself recently spoke about the injury, why it has taken so long to diagnose, and when he could return to the court for Los Angeles. Davis expressed caution in explaining why he is going to take his time to return as the injury he is dealing with could end up being much, much worse if he isn’t careful (h/t Dave McMenamin, ESPN).

"“I think the biggest thing is the stress reaction, though, just monitoring that. Because that can definitely lead to six, seven, eight months out — which I would rather take four weeks than seven months. I’m not saying I’ll be back in four weeks — but hopefully.”"

Every single Lakers fan would prefer Davis take a week or two longer to return if that reduces the chance of this being a long-term injury. That being said, Davis hasn’t had the cleanest bill of health in his NBA career so hearing him explain how long he could be out is a bit concerning.

Anthony Davis injury news: Lakers star could need surgery in the offseason.

In addition to explaining how serious this injury could be if not treated properly, Davis also added that there is a chance he might need surgery in the offseason to remove the bone spur in his foot. This appears to be something he can play through but to prevent long-term issues, surgery may be needed.

This is absolutely something to monitor, even if Davis comes back and looks great. The longer the Lakers’ season lasts the more potential complications this could create. Not only do the chances of him re-injuring his foot increase with more minutes, but the recovery time in the summer post-surgery would decrease as well.

Anthony Davis was playing arguably the best basketball of his career before his injury, proving that he is still one of the best players in the entire league. At this point, all Lakers fans can hope for is that Davis can get healthy and that it won’t take another six, seven, or eight months.
