No player on the Los Angeles Lakers benefitted from the Russell Westbrook trade more than Austin Reaves. The Westbrook trade at the deadline opened the door for Reaves to start for the purple and gold and the rest was history.

Reaves excelled in the starting role and carried that into the NBA Playoffs, where the recently undrafted guard averaged 16.9 points, 4.6 assists and 4.4 rebounds per game. That earned Reaves a nice payday this offseason as well as an invitation to play for Team USA in the FIBA World Cup.

Reaves has become the breakout NBA star of the last six months. Despite all he has accomplished in that time, the most telling sign that Reaves has officially arrived comes via NBA 2K24. It has nothing to do with his rating, either. Instead, Reaves actually getting his face in the game proves just how far he has come.

Lakers’ Austin Reaves has finally (officially) arrived in NBA 2K24

Look, we understand that the folks over at 2K do not have the capacity to do a face scan for every single player in the league. That would be incredibly cumbersome and would be a waste of time for players that they think won’t last in the league.

But they still have a team of developers that can mold someone’s face to at least look like a real-life NBA player. I don’t know about you, but that Reaves’ player model before the face scan might be one of the worst player models I have ever seen. I have made myself look more realistic in 2K video games.

It seems like such a small thing — especially for a player that plays for the most prestigious team in the league and is also representing his country in an international tournament — but this still should mean something for Reaves. Everyone grows up playing these games and using their favorite players. Now, Reaves can say he is actually in the game.

For what it is worth, Reaves is going to start NBA 2K24 with an 81 overall rating. That is a big jump from last year, as he started NBA 2K23 with a 74 overall rating.

Next. 22 players the Lakers gave up on too early. dark
