When does NBA Training Camp start? Dates Lakers fans need to know

No other sport has the same presence throughout all 12 months on the calendar like the NBA. While it has been almost four months since the Los Angeles Lakers lost in the Western Conference Finals, so much has happened that it has not even felt like four months.

It might feel like yesterday that the Lakers were swept by the Denver Nuggets, making it all the more surprising that the 2023-24 season is right around the corner. The Lakers start the season at the end of October and before that the team has to go through training camp and the preseason.

While NBA training camp might not be as newsworthy as, say, NFL training camp, the preseason can be a lot more telling. Here is everything you need to know ahead of the Lake Show’s quest for an 18th championship this season.

When does NBA training camp start?

NBA training camp technically begins on September 27 but that is only for teams that play a preseason game outside of the United States. That does not apply to the Lakers, so they are going to have to wait for the start of camp.

Training camp officially opens on October 3. However, veteran players are allowed to report to their respective teams on October 2. Those players cannot report to their teams any earlier than 11 a.m. local time.

When is Lakers media day?

The Lakers have not officially announced a date for Lakers media day yet but in recent years, the team has held media day on the Monday before training camp. With October 3 being a Tuesday, all signs are pointing to Lakers media day being on Monday, October 2.

When does the Lakers preseason begin?

The NBA preseason officially begins on Thursday, October 5. The Lakers do not play their first preseason game until Saturday, October 7. Los Angeles’ preseason games are as followed:

  • October 7: at Golden State Warriors
  • October 9: vs Brooklyn Nets (Las Vegas)
  • October 11: vs Sacramento Kings (Anaheim)
  • October 13: vs Golden State Warriors
  • October 15: vs Milwaukee Bucks
  • October 17: vs Phoenix Suns (Palm Springs)

When does the Lakers roster have to be set for the 2023-24 season?

The deadline to set the roster for the 2023-24 season is on Monday, October 23 at 5 p.m. ET. As it stands right now, the Lakers have 13 players on the roster and have not yet signed anyone to training camp contracts.
