There are two A-list centers in free agency that would satisfy the type of demands Luka Doncic made of what his starting big should look like with the Los Angeles Lakers. Both of them are restricted free agents. However, Rob Pelinka and the front office have the money to make a run at either Jalen Duren or Walker Kessler. Sam Amick's latest scoop suggested that could be on its way.
"Detroit Pistons restricted free agent center Jalen Duren had a productive meeting with the Lakers on Tuesday and is scheduled to meet with them again on Wednesday morning, league sources told The Athletic."
According to Amick, Duren was told the Lakers view him as a 'maximum-salary level player.' A big payday has been something previous reports have emphasized as important for the Pistons center. After LeBron James announced his intention to leave Los Angeles, Hollywood's franchise can certainly afford that move.
Amick added the Lakers could be willing to go big with an offer sheet for this past season's All-NBA Third Team member. That would offer an explanation as to why Los Angeles has no confirmed moves to start free agency despite possessing more cap space than any other team.
Lakers may be willing to gamble on Jalen Duren with an offer sheet
Just a few weeks ago, I took a fair crack at estimating that Los Angeles could be bold enough to try their luck at prying away one of the top restricted free agents on the market. Here we are.
With a clear need at center, the Lakers have few other options but to pursue one of the two marquee names in restricted free agency. Duren and Kessler are both strong fits with Doncic in one way or another. Los Angeles could view this as the best way to spend their money.
Notably, the Lakers are said to have met with Kessler and his representatives as well. This could quickly become a matter of which free agent they prefer to see in Los Angeles.
Duren has certainly established himself quicker as an All-NBA talent, and that could tip the scales in his favor. It does not hurt that Doncic has previously expressed his admiration for his game either.
The Lakers need to find a path to stay in contending-level shape after losing James. Getting a premier center to hold down the middle on both ends for Doncic and Austin Reaves could provide it. If that does prove to be their strategy, expect Los Angeles to avoid spending big on the open market in the meantime.
