The Los Angeles Lakers are officially moving into a new era with former franchise player LeBron James opting to sign elsewhere in 2026. In the process, they're clearing a path for a new generation of players to find their place in a revamped and restructured rotation.

No player stands to benefit more from James departing than rookie Cameron Carr, who suddenly has a clear path to big minutes and an apparent endorsement of his skill set.

The Lakers acquired Carr with their first-round selection at the 2026 NBA Draft. It was an act in clear coordinance with the report that Los Angeles aspires to build its roster in the image of the 2023-24 Dallas Mavericks team that franchise player Luka Doncic led to the NBA Finals.

Much like the wings Doncic played with in Dallas, Carr projects to be an athletic 3-and-D wing and lob threat. That makes the James decision all the more intriguing.

With James out of the picture, the Lakers can fully commit to redefining the manner in which their wings play. Doncic and Austin Reaves are fairly ball-dominant guards, which makes Los Angeles' prioritization of athletic defenders and three-point shooters even easier to understand.

With James' 33.2 minutes per game removed from the rotation and the Lakers seemingly prioritizing the skill set that Carr possesses, the door is wide open for him to claim his spot.

Lakers seemingly prioritize the Cameron Carr archetype along the wings

Carr stands at 6'4.5" without shoes, boasts a massive 7'0.75" wingspan, and ranks among the most athletic players in the 2026 NBA Draft. He posted an insane 42.5" max vertical leap and finished in the top five in all agility drills among wings at the Combine.

Beyond his physical abilities, Carr is a captivating defensive prospect whose film suggests he has the skill set to thrive in the 3-and-D role—and perhaps even adapting beyond it.

Carr shot 37.4 percent on 6.1 three-point field goal attempts per game during his final season at Baylor. Beyond the numbers, he shot with limitless range, burying shots from well beyond the NBA three-point line on a rather consistent basis.

Defensively, Carr is already a shot-blocker and passing lane disruptor who has displayed the capacity for lockdown tendencies in on-ball situations.

Los Angeles will still be active in free agency and could clearly create competition for Carr to secure minutes. It certainly seems as though their actions align with their reported vision, however, as the pursuit of meeting modern standards for two-way play has finally begun.

Between the minutes that James won't be playing and the shift in ideology, the Lakers have created a golden opportunity to Carr to make an instant impact as a rookie.
