Lakers' rival may see Giannis Antetokounmpo dreams crumble amid latest rumors

Did anyone ever believe the Trail Blazers had a real chance at Giannis (I didn't)

It's long been reported that Giannis Antetokounmpo, were he to be traded by the Milwaukee Bucks, would prefer to remain in the Eastern Conference. There are two clear reasons why: 1) The path to an NBA Finals is less difficult in the East, and 2) Its teams are located in cities much closer to Antetokounmpo's home base in Europe.

None of the most recent intel on Giannis contradicts the above. The reported frontrunners for Antetokounmpo are the Miami Heat and the Boston Celtics.

Meanwhile, West teams like the Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves reportedly aren't involved at all in Giannis discussions. And you might be able to add the Portland Trail Blazers to that list now, too.

The Trail Blazers may have just fallen out of the Giannis sweepstakes

Although Portland has certainly been interested in Giannis for a long time, it sounds like that interest has never been reciprocated, and at some point, Portland has to move on. That time might be now. According to a brand new report from NBA insider Jake Fischer (subscription required), there's widespread doubt that Giannis is willing to sign an extension with the Trail Blazers, a crucial variable that could lead Portland to avoid attempting a trade. (Remember: Giannis is only under contract for one more season).

"There is skepticism ... that Antetokounmpo would truly be open to signing a contract extension in Portland, which is expected to inevitably dissuade the Trail Blazers from trading for him directly," Fischer wrote.

Trail Blazers-Giannis update is music to Lakers' ears

Another West team bites the dust in the Giannis sweepstakes! If Fischer's reporting is an indication that Portland doesn't have a real shot at Giannis (did they ever?), or perhaps that the Blazers aren't going to shoot their Giannis shot at all, it's only good news for the Lakers.

Don't forget that Portland was a playoff team in 2025-26. They have a lot of nice pieces and a young, blooming star in Deni Avdija. The Blazers aren't a team to be slept on, and if they'd been able to add Giannis, there's absolutely no team in the West (the Lakers certainly included) who'd have relished the idea of drawing Portland in an early-round playoff series.

Blazers fans shouldn't be too discouraged by Giannis news

This was, after all, Antetokounmpo's decision (if it's indeed true that he doesn't care to extend with Portland), and again, it's a decision based on the East being easier and closer to Greece, not the Trail Blazers being an unattractive team.

If anything, Portland's aggressive stance on Giannis in the past months signals that they're serious about winning now. This should serve as a comforting sign to the Blazers' fan base, as well as a warning sign to their competition in the West (looking at you, Lakers).
