Everyone's wondering what LeBron James is going to do this offseason, and it'll be tough to focus on any other summer NBA storyline until we know LeBron's next move.
The Lakers have plenty of business reasons to re-sign James at whatever price he wants, but are we assuming too readily that James definitely wants to return to LA, and has pretty much ruled out other options?
On Wednesday, LeBron resurrected a storyline that was alive and well during this past season but had since died -- the idea of James returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers for the 2026-27 campaign. How did Bron bring this narrative back to life, you ask? By liking a post on Instagram that depicted James in a Cavs uniform under the headline, "Come Home".

LeBron fuels Cavaliers return rumors with liked Instagram post
Now, let's not get too carried away here. This may have just been Bron showing love to whichever fan made that video as a tribute to LeBron's Cleveland days and all that he means to the Cavaliers' organization. It has to feel nice to have an entire city hoping for your return in free agency, and maybe James just had a moment where he wanted to reciprocate the good vibes.
At the same time, we know how smart and calculating Bron is, and we know that he realizes the gravity of any action he takes on social media. As such, he had to know that "liking" this post would make waves. This leads us to further questions. Was this just Bron trying to keep his name in the headlines, while the Cavs battle it out in the ECF, and while LeBron's Lakers sit at home watching the rest of the postseason on television? This sounds more like it.
LeBron is just toying with everyone on Instagram with latest Cavaliers post like
LeBron knows that the Cavaliers are going to be in the NBA headlines for at least another three games, so why not insert himself into the conversation? Especially if the Cavs end up losing to the Knicks in this series, the idea of a LeBron return will be an easy topic for discussion on all of the First Take-like shows that sadly grace the national TV screens these days. And James just gave those shows plenty of material for conversation, as if there wasn't enough already.
Ultimately, Lakers fans shouldn't get too worried about this Instagram post. LeBron's at home watching some basketball, and he decided to have some fun on social media. Being the ultimate entertainer that he is, Bron's always had a flair for the dramatic. This won't be the last "tease" that James drops on social media this summer, and we'll all be tuned in waiting for the next one. It doesn't mean that he's thinking about leaving the Lakers. In fact, it might be an indication that he knows he's sticking around, and he just wants to have some fun before announcing that move.
