LeBron James' legendary feat suddenly looks even more absurd after these NBA Playoffs

LeBron's 2011-2018 run was beyond comprehension.

The Eastern Conference Finals are underway, but no matter who wins the series between the New York Knicks and Cleveland Cavaliers, it'll make for the eighth non-consecutive winner of the Eastern Conference in a row, dating back to the 2017-18 season, when LeBron James' Cavaliers won their fourth-straight Eastern Conference Finals.

And before that run by Cleveland, LeBron's Miami Heat won four straight East titles from 2011 to 2015.

It's absolutely absurd when you look back at LeBron making it to the NBA Finals eight years in a row (with three titles during that stretch), especially now that we've witnessed eight years in a row in which no single team has won the East in consecutive seasons.

LeBron James' insane run from 2011 to 2018 looks even more otherworldly now

The Boston Celtics have come the closest to winning consecutive East titles since the end of LeBron's reign. The Celtics advanced to the NBA Finals in 2022 and 2024 (under Ime Udoka in '22 and Joe Mazzulla in '24), but Mazzulla's 2023 team lost to the Miami Heat in seven games in the ECF.

The Toronto Raptors had a shot to establish a dominant stretch following their 2019 NBA championship, but Kawhi Leonard signed with the Los Angeles Clippers, forcing Toronto into a retool.

LeBron's outrageous consistency during the 2010's wasn't appreciated enough

So many things have to go right over the course of two consecutive seasons for a team to make it to the Finals in back-to-back years. First of all, you need to stay healthy. LeBron's durability during his eight-year Finals streak was, in and of itself, an impressive accomplishment.

So often, we see a team or even a singular player looking like they're on the verge of a dominant five or even 10-year stretch, and we begin to make assumptions about a dynasty or multiple MVPs. We don't take into account all of the problems that can arise over multiple years in the NBA, from injuries to shooting slumps and other unexpected outcomes that lead to parity between teams and players around the league.

LeBron transcended that parity for eight straight years, and he did it with two separate franchises. We're not going to see a career like this again anytime soon.

LeBron has now been with the Lakers for eight seasons

Continuing this theme of eight seasons, LeBron has now played for eight consecutive seasons with the Lakers, the longest stretch he's ever spent with one team consecutively. It's still unknown whether or not LeBron will lengthen that streak to nine seasons by signing with LA this summer.

For a while during the 2025-26 season, it seemed likely that LeBron could wind up back in the Eastern Conference next season, but more recent developments make a Lakers return seem inevitable. We'll know a lot more within a month or so, as the NBA Draft looms on June 23 and the Lakers have a lot of offseason to-do's.
