LeBron James playing another season suddenly isn't the lock everyone assumed

The Los Angeles Lakers star may not need the theatrics of a retirement tour after all.

A career as legendary as the one that LeBron James has had deserves to be celebrated, right? There needs to be a full season of all 30 NBA teams showering the current Los Angeles Lakers star with love for his impact on the league, correct? Well, maybe not.

Dan Woike and Sam Amick of The Athletic teamed up for an article discussing James' future and what they know. The idea of a farewell tour being a necessity did not actually align with the intel of the two insiders.

"Team and league sources granted anonymity to speak openly say James has made no decisions regarding his future; that retirement remains a real possibility. The notion that James would want a farewell tour ... is false, those sources said, with several sources even hearing that directly from James himself."

The last part of what Woike and Amick had to say is the real meat on the bones to be found here. If this idea is coming directly from the horse's mouth, it immediately changes the conversation about what this offseason could look like for both James and the Lakers.

LeBron James retiring in 2026 cannot be ruled out just yet

Maybe LeBron does not want to be one of those players who keeps suiting up until the wheels completely fall off. James has naturally declined from his undisputed status as the best player in the world, but the version of him that is still playing today clearly remains a star all the same.

The aging legend was thrust into the role of being the Lakers' first option again, and the results were far better than they had any business being for someone who is 41 years old. At an age that few other players even make it to, James continues to reset expectations for what is possible.

Perhaps that is the lasting image LeBron could want of himself.

On one hand, why leave any seasons of NBA basketball on the table when there is clearly more juice in the tank? His soon-to-be first round opponent, Kevin Durant, thought James could play until he was 45 years old.

That much may be true, as crazy as it sounds. However, what does that version of LeBron look like?

Would James still be a star at that point? Can LeBron still maintain close to his current level for one more year after this?

The latter comes across as much more possible. It is why most of the conversations have been about where James goes next, and not how long until he retires.

However, for a player who cares about legacy and image, one last playoff run of elevated performance in the face of overwhelming odds does paint a pretty picture of who James was in his final years for future generations.

The safe assumption is still to believe LeBron will suit up again in the 2026-27 season. That would be purely based on just how great James continues to play. However, tapping out now, with little more left to accomplish, would create a lasting visual that works in the future Hall of Famer's favor.
