The Los Angeles Lakers are forcing LeBron James to choose between taking a pay cut and finding a new team. The franchise is prioritizing a long-term deal for Austin Reaves in free agency. They are building around Luka Doncic and want AR to be his co-star for years to come. In the NBA’s current cap landscape, it is unrealistic to have three max contracts. LeBron will have to sacrifice or find a new home.

This is uncharted territory for King James. He was always the most important player on his team before Luka arrived in Los Angeles. Now, Reaves’ star breakout has the Lakers prioritizing his future over LeBron’s. The 41-year-old wants to decide on his own timetable, but the Lakers aren’t going to let that happen.

Los Angeles has cap space, but needs to figure out the futures of Reaves, LeBron, Rui Hachimura, Luke Kennard, Marcus Smart, Deandre Ayton, and Jaxson Hayes. After getting swept by the Thunder in the second round of the playoffs, the Lakers can’t just run it back. They must improve their roster, which will take money. LA’s best offer to LeBron will be significantly below the max, and James will have a tough decision to make.

LeBron James must take a pay cut to stay with the Lakers

James was outstanding this season. He missed All-NBA for the first time since his rookie year in 2004, but it was only because LeBron failed to play 65 games. For the first time in his career, LBJ was the team’s third offensive option, but that plan changed when Luka and Reaves were injured in the same game late in the season.

LeBron led the Lakers to a first-round playoff upset over the Rockets. The 41-year-old averaged 23.2 points, 7.3 assists, 6.7 rebounds, and 1.3 steals in 38.4 minutes per game during the playoffs. He was still elite, but the purple and gold cannot afford to pay him like a superstar.

LeBron would be worth every penny. He sells tickets and merchandise, but the Lakers want to win a championship. They cannot do that with their current roster. LA has to upgrade at center and add a 3-and-D wing. The franchise needs money to make that happen, and the only way to get it is by paying King James less.

Austin Reaves is rumored to be searching for a max contract. It will likely cost the Lakers Rui Hachimura, and adds further constraints on what the franchise could offer LeBron. Reaves is the priority. There is a path to bring LeBron back and keep AR. It would take both players accepting less than the max. That is a significant ask from two stars, but that is how to build a title contender in the modern NBA.

LeBron has to choose between a pay cut and finding a new team. Fans know he wants to play for the Lakers. He has proved that for the last eight years, but the franchise has always paid him handsomely. Will LeBron take $20-30 million to give Los Angeles room to upgrade? King James says he wants to compete for championships in his final years. That is the path, but it comes with the pain of taking less.

The Los Angeles Lakers have forced LeBron James to make a decision he hasn't faced in his NBA career. They know it may force the GOAT to walk in free agency. The Lakers are accepting that risk as they look to build a title contender around Luka Doncic.

It is a bold move, especially after James was outstanding in the playoffs. Sadly, spending pain comes for every contender. All LA fans can do is stay tuned to see how it all pans out.
