The Los Angeles Lakers were swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the second round of the playoffs, but Luka Doncic isn’t going anywhere. The superstar missed the entire postseason recovering from a hamstring injury. Fans know he would have made a difference. Still, Luka wants to win a championship. LA fell short and has work to do to be a serious threat. Luckily, Luka should be the last of the fans’ worries.
Doncic didn’t want to be a Laker like so many other stars. He was traded to Los Angeles without his knowledge in the most shocking blockbuster in recent NBA history. The Lakers quickly convinced Luka to sign an extension and become the face of the franchise. Clearly, it all worked. Doncic had this to say after his team’s Game 4 loss to the Thunder that ended their season.
“I feel very comfortable. I like living here. I like playing for the Lakers. It is one of the best organizations in the world. Just being a Laker means a lot to me. I feel very good here, so there is nothing else to add to that.”
Luka is locked in as the alpha. He made it clear that he wasn’t close to playing in the playoffs because of a hamstring injury. It was a disappointing end to a once promising season, but the heartbreak didn’t make Doncic waiver.
Luka Doncic is locked in with the Lakers
Fans can expect changes this offseason. The Lakers want to build the roster around Luka. They knew he was locked in, but it is always good to hear a star player say it to the media. Everyone knows the top players have the power. If they want to be traded, they are usually dealt in short order. Luckily, Lakers fans don’t have those problems.
Los Angeles has just five other players under contract for next season. That could balloon to seven if Marcus Smart and Deandre Ayton accept their player options. The Lakers want to use the available cap space to upgrade their roster, but the first order of business is figuring out the futures of LeBron James and Austin Reaves. Both are unrestricted free agents and will have plenty of suitors.
Putting shooting and defense around Luka wins. He led the Mavericks to the 2024 NBA Finals with this formula. Sadly, that puts the futures of Luke Kennard, Rui Hachimura, Deandre Ayton, Maxi Kleber, and Dalton Knecht in question. Ideally, LA would upgrade those five spots, but doing so won’t be easy.
Fans are breathing easy about Luka. The last thing they needed was Doncic opening up any questions about his future after a hamstring injury ended his season early. The 27-year-old is a loyal guy. He wanted to spend his entire career with the Mavericks before they traded him without his knowledge. Now, Luka has given that loyalty to the Lakers.
Los Angeles Lakers fans know Luka Doncic is locked in, but now the hard part begins. Rob Pelinka and the front office must build the roster around him into a title contender. It will take significant upgrades. All fans can do is stay tuned to see how it all plays out.
