The Los Angeles Lakers' decision to trade for Luka Doncic ultimately ruined their relationship with LeBron James. King James informed the team he won’t return next season, according to Shams Charania. LeBron has been the alpha for his entire career, but it was clear that LA was building around Luka for the moment he arrived. James had to accept being the second and sometimes even third option. The Lakers had to trade for Doncic, but it ultimately cost them LeBron.

Fans saw this coming with the smoke about him joining the Golden State Warriors. LeBron wasn’t just creating leverage. He wants to finish his career on a team that makes him a star. James knows there are teams where he can be the number one scoring option and still make a massive impact. He was going to be behind Luka and Austin Reaves on the Lakers. LeBron plans to play next season, but he won’t be back on the Lakers.

Lakers fans can blame Luka for ruining things with LeBron, but this divorce was coming. King James turns 42 in December. He can’t play forever. LeBron has already played the most seasons in NBA history. The departure was coming, and it lets Los Angeles fully build the team around Luka.

LeBron knew the writing was on the wall. Luka got introduced last in the starting lineup last season. Doncic had a say over the team’s decision-making and just led the NBA in scoring. Luka is in his prime and ready to lead the Lakers to a championship. King James would have to accept being a role player to stay with the purple and gold. Clearly, that isn’t what he wanted.

Lakers fans are panicked already, but the offseason is just starting. LeBron is gone. Marcus Smart seems likely to exit. They did re-sign Austin Reaves, but it took every dollar of a max contract to make it happen. The Lakers have several holes to fill and just lost their third-best player. Rob Pelinka and the front office have work to do.

LeBron is a Lakers legend. He brought the franchise a championship in 2020 and got them out of the worst period in franchise history. Credit to King James, but this is Luka’s team now.

The Lakers' future felt bleak before the Doncic trade. Anthony Davis had a lengthy injury history that has only gotten worse, and LeBron was 40. LA made a wise pivot, but now must do the hard work of building around Luka.

The Luka Doncic trade ultimately ruined the Lakers’ relationship with LeBron James. King James was the alpha and had a say over the decision-making before Doncic arrived. Once Luka took over, LeBron was a bit part. He opted into his contract last season and will now walk in free agency. It was a great run, but LeBron decided it was time to move.

The Lakers aren’t losing sleep. They are eager to build around Luka and put a championship roster around him. Stay tuned to see how it all shakes out.
