Rui Hachimura's Lakers future is suddenly in the hands of LeBron James

The two Los Angeles Lakers teammates will be in direct competition for the pockets of the franchise.

Rui Hachimura reminded everyone just how important and valuable he is to the Los Angeles Lakers amid a playoff run that should not be forgotten before free agency arrives. However, Hachimura may still be at the mercy of whatever LeBron James decides to do this offseason.

As of now, James' official statement following the Lakers' playoff exit was one of lacking clarity. LeBron has not figured out what he wants to do next season — whether that means retiring, returning to the Lakers, or heading elsewhere. When the Lakers star does make his mind up, it will matter for Hachimura.

Rui's incredible playoff run should have made an unmissable case for why the Lakers need to keep him around in Los Angeles. However, the Lakers have plenty of needs to address in retooling around Luka Doncic this summer. They will need to be calculated with their finances.

That includes careful consideration about which of their own free agents they want to bring back. Despite James' age, the star-caliber production of LeBron would still theoretically be prioritized over Rui. If the Lakers are running out of money in free agency, Hachimura could become the odd man out.

Lakers' free agency plans will be costly and the same goes for Rui Hachimura

Austin Reaves, who is expected to star as Doncic's running mate for the foreseeable future, will be priority number one for the Lakers. Once his player option for the 2026-27 season is declined, Los Angeles will need to pay up.

Not far behind him will be the decision of what to do with James. LeBron may be near the end of the road, but the ageless star continues to prove just how much more he has to give to the game at every step. Taking over as the leading act in these playoffs only reaffirmed that.

James and Hachimura will not only be competing for the same money pool, but they are also in a direct rivalry for the same positional minutes. Rui lost that battle during the season, too, getting moved to the bench when the Lakers were at their best, with everyone available, in March.

The only real factor that gives Hachimura a clear edge over James with relation to the Lakers' plans is age. Rui is only 28 years old, while LeBron is near the end of his run at 41.

Even so, the time for a championship push is now. That should mean James still gets priority for holding almost every other factor over Hachimura.

Ideally, the Lakers would want both players back in purple and gold next season. Hachimura still brings plenty of value as a sixth man for Los Angeles. His shooting ability is an excellent compliment for Doncic. Rui wants to be back, too, according to Dan Woike and Sam Amick.

The pair wrote: "Hachimura could be a priority for the Lakers. The 28-year-old is widely believed to want to stay with the Lakers."

Even then, money is still the pivotal factor here. Hachimura could easily command north of $20 million in free agency after his ridiculous playoff campaign of shooting 56.9 percent from beyond the arc.

Meanwhile, the Lakers have a depth crisis. As much as they would love to have that long ball production, they would also enjoy using that type of money on a couple of available free agents to shore up multiple issues.

The easiest solution the Lakers would hope for is James taking a sizable pay cut in pursuit of a fifth championship. Should Los Angeles still be forced to pay a reasonable sum for the services of either one of these guys, LeBron could prove to be the reason Rui inks a deal elsewhere.
