Warriors' growing threat to steal LeBron James shouldn't worry the Lakers too much

There is added momentum on the rumor mill, but maybe not in practicality.

The Golden State Warriors want LeBron James. Their admiration of the 41-year-old G.O.A.T. has been the league's worst-kept secret in the lead-up to free agency. Marc Stein and Jake Fischer were the latest to add to the LeBron-Warriors rumors ahead of the summer.

"League sources maintain that Golden State remains legitimately interested in adding LeBron to their Stephen Curry/Jimmy Butler/Draymond Green core coached by Steve Kerr."

The Stein Line added that part of the pitch to James will be some level of commuting from Los Angeles in an effort to not uproot the lives of his family in a career-related move. However, LeBron could just as easily accomplish that by simply staying with the Los Angeles Lakers.

In relation to that, the pair of NBA insiders relayed a message that has gained momentum throughout the second-half of the 2025-26 season. One more year with the Lakers is the easiest career decision for James at this point.

"Staying with the Lakers is widely believed to be his preferred choice because he is so entrenched in Los Angeles now after eight seasons with the purple and gold."

Los Angeles continues to shine brightly as the best home for LeBron James

Fischer and Stein reminded everyone of another important factor in this equation. No matter the destination, James' finances are expected to take a hit to some capacity.

Out of the spots most expect to appeal to LeBron, Cleveland would likely require the biggest financial sacrifice for James despite the obvious upside from a career storyline perspective. The Warriors have more wiggle room to pay the aging star, but it would still be well short of any max contract.

Let's take it seriously for a second that Golden State is really growing as a legitimate landing spot for LeBron. The Warriors can offer a $15.1 million nontaxpayer midlevel exception, an opportunity to commute back to Los Angeles, and a good team to join.

The Lakers can match them financially if necessary. James can stay put in Los Angeles and not have to worry about commuting from the Bay Area. Plus, the better winning situation is playing with Luka Doncic and company for one added year.

If those are the three main categories of focus, weighing Cleveland, Golden State, and Los Angeles against each other should lead most to have the same conclusion: the Lakers are the most attractive destination in every aspect. It is hard to argue against that being the case.

The Lakers would still benefit greatly from James returning, too. Both sides should have reason to continue the marriage, and hearing all the rumors only reinforces why that conclusion continues to make sense for LeBron and Los Angeles.
