LeBron James just ruled out at least half of all NBA teams in free agency

His comments during a new podcast appearance were crystal clear.

LeBron James has played 23 seasons of NBA basketball, and he's done a whole lot of winning during most of that stretch. As the 41-year-old GOAT candidate enjoys some time off before his widely expected 24th season, James has to be ruminating daily on what he wants his 2026-27 campaign to look like.

Of course, that thought process involves the free-agent James picking a team to play for, first and foremost! And although the general consensus around the league is that a return to the Los Angeles Lakers is inevitable for James (almost surely on a one-year deal), nothing can be ruled out, especially not a return to the Cleveland Cavaliers for a third and final marriage (wouldn't that be storybook stuff?).

Or ... it sounds like some teams can be ruled out. When LeBron spoke with NBA legend Steve Nash on their Mind the Game podcast this week, Bron revealed that he absolutely, positively wants to play for a winning team next season (if he plays at all).

LeBron James just ruled out any team in free agency that isn't in win-now mode

“You want to be excited about going to work every day," LeBron told Nash. "And being around a group of guys that feel the same way and [aren't going to] take steps backwards. You ... understand [that] a season is a long marathon and whatever the case may be. But those building blocks throughout the course of the season are what matter when you get to the sprint, which is ... the postseason. So, yeah, I’m not going anywhere [where] it’s a start over at year 24 or things of that nature.”

So there you have it, LeBron will not be joining the Chicago Bulls or Brooklyn Nets this summer, despite their bounteous cap space! But in all seriousness, these comments from LeBron actually rule out a lot more teams than just the Bulls or Nets. Besides any franchise that isn't in contend mode (or close), we can also rule out some winning clubs that don't have any feasible financial path to paying for James.

This is why a healthy majority of analysts have determined that LeBron is most likely headed back to the Lakers.

There would be an irony involved in LeBron joining the Lakers for winning reasons, seeing as his very cap hit might prevent LA from going out and getting depth pieces to help the team contend. But let's be honest, it's not like LeBron is ring-chasing. A return to LA would be a decision born out of a few different factors: his family is based in Los Angeles, his son plays for the Lakers, the Lakers can pay him more than most (or any) other suitors, and yes, the Lakers are a winning team ... even if they aren't a true contender.
