Lakers’ Brass to Discuss Player Development with Byron Scott

The Lakers brass is going to define the relationship when Byron Scott returns from the extended road trip

Byron Scott has received a healthy share of criticism from the public regarding his handling of the Lakers talented young players. Despite reports that his job is secure, it seems that the front office at least feels the need to discuss these matters with their head coach.

Mark Medina has reported that the Mitch Kupchak and Jim Buss will be meeting with Byron Scott next week to discuss his overall strategy for developing his players. While this may be a minor occurrence it is definitely heartening to see that the front office shares some of the same concerns as the fans.

Ideally, the front office will give Byron Scott a fairly concrete set of expectations in terms of giving more playing time to young players. Hopefully, this would include inserting players like Tarik Black and Anthony Brown into the line-ups, and allowing for more crunch-time minutes for the young guys.

Another thing that should be discussed at this meeting is the front office’s responsibility to add more young talent to this team.

Coming into the season they made some very poor decisions regarding personnel, and now need to remedy that situation by moving veterans and opening up roster spots for young players.

Trading players like Nick Young or Lou Williams, or even cutting guys like Metta World Peace or Marcelo Huertas could allow the Lakers to expand their core and give players more time to develop.

Moves like this could help to force Scott’s hand in playing the young guys more, and would be beneficial for the Lakers in the long run.

At the very least one would hope that the front office will discuss priorities with Scott, and establish that winning games should no longer be his primary goal as a coach. Giving him a different focus may improve Scott’s handling of the team, and could bring the team’s overall trajectory more in line with reality.

In any case, it is a step in the right direction for the front office to call a meeting at this point.

Hopefully, Byron Scott will be held accountable for his decisions, and the front office will acknowledge their own mistakes, and the two parties will work together to improve the situation and make use of what will otherwise be a wasted season.
