Lakers: Colin Cowherd Says D’Angelo Russell Is Least of LA’s Problems

Though the point guard’s name has been in headlines for the wrong reasons, radio personality Colin Cowherd says D’Angelo Russell is not to blame for LA’s struggles

The past several hours have been hard on Los Angeles Lakers point guard D’Angelo Russell. Following a report that Russell had been shunned by his teammates, Russell has also been the target of much blame throughout social media.

Indeed, this incident led many, most notably television personality Stephen A. Smith, to question the youngster’s maturity.

While not all of the information surrounding the situation has been made available yet, many people have taken sides on the whole conundrum: some have ostracized Russell, while others like Fox Sports radio host Colin Cowherd have defended the Ohio State product.

".@ColinCowherd: D’Angelo Russell made a dumb mistake, but he’s the LEAST of the Lakers problems. #HerdHerehttps://t.co/HrEIes81A2— Herd w/Colin Cowherd (@TheHerd) March 30, 2016"

Cowherd argues that Russell is the least of the Lakers’ problems, claiming that the rookie is the only bright spot for the team going forward.

"“Yeah, D’Angelo Russell did something absolutely unforgivable. Oh, except Kobe did the same thing without video. They’re babies, they’re kids. They make mistakes. It’s your job as a franchise to surround those young players with smart guys. Washington got him [Nick Young] out of the locker room in a heart beat. What did the Lakers do? Sign him to a five year deal…A 30 year old guy who calls himself ‘Swaggy P’ and is proud of it. Go ahead, bury D’Angelo Russell…This franchise is a mess. He’s the last guy you should blame. He’s the only guy that’s gonna save you because you’re probably not getting Ben Simmons in the ping pong lottery…”"

Cowherd goes on to criticize the Lakers’ front office for surrounding Russell with questionable players like Nick Young, who now finds himself in the headlines for the second time in as many weeks.

Nonetheless, this is a bad look for Russell, Young, and the Lakers organization as a whole. Cowherd is one of many who have voiced their opinion on this issue and was one of the only ones to side with Russell in this whole mess.

They say that time heals all wounds, so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
