Recent Los Angeles Lakers rumors involve the team’s head coaching search, as two legends reportedly pushed Jeanie Buss toward Tyronn Lue.

Los Angeles Lakers rumors have dominated headlines in recent days. Despite not even being in the playoffs, the Lakers are still very popular in news cycles. Today, the biggest news involved their search for a new head coach.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that the Phoenix Suns had filled their head coaching vacancy. Monty Williams, who is currently an assistant with the Philadelphia 76ers, is going to take over as the head man for the Suns, who fired Igor Kokoskov after one season as head coach.

With Williams off to Phoenix, the Lakers have to go elsewhere to fill their vacant head coaching spot. Shortly after the Williams news, their target came into sight.

Less than an hour after the Williams to Phoenix news broke, it was reported that Tyronn Lue was likely to be the next head coach of the Lakers. Lue had interviewed twice with the Lakers and was reportedly the team’s top choice all along.

Los Angeles is reportedly drawing up an offer for Lue, who is in Las Vegas with his representatives. Coincidentally, LeBron James is also in Las Vegas with Maverick Carter.

While some people will say that Williams chose the Suns over the Lakers, that may not be the case. If you don’t believe that Lue was their top target all along, this may change your mind.

Magic Johnson and Jeanie Buss had dinner this week and have been in regular contact. At some point during that contact, Johnson helped sway Buss’ decision toward Lue as the next head coach. Johnson wasn’t the only Lakers legend to weigh in on the new head coach.

According to Brad Turner of the Los Angeles Times, former Lakers head coach Phil Jackson also thought that Lue would be a very good head coach for the Lakers.

People will probably poke fun at Jackson for recommending Lue to the Lakers as he had a bad track record in his last position. When he was president of the New York Knicks, Jackson hired Derek Fisher, and that was a disaster. His replacement for Fisher, Jeff Hornacek, wasn’t much better.

However, Jackson’s first choice for the Knicks’ head coaching job was Steve Kerr. Kerr turned down the Knicks and decided to become head coach with the Golden State Warriors. Things have turned out pretty good for Kerr and had Jackson landed him with the Knicks, things may have gone differently in the Big Apple as well.
