Everyone had been desperately pleading for the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade sage to mercifully meet its end for longer than anyone would care to admit. Monday night finally brought that closure for the NBA and its fans. The Miami Heat made it happen. Shams Charania got his scoop.
"The Milwaukee Bucks are trading franchise icon Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat for Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, 3 first-round picks (including No. 13), 1 pick swap and 1 second-rounder, sources tell ESPN."
Heat fans will be celebrating in the streets all night after their front office finally broke a cycle of chasing stars to no end. This time they actually secured their guy.
While those in Miami will be satisfied in the moment, Los Angeles Lakers fans can join in with a smirk in the background. The long and short: not only does Giannis stay out of the Western Conference, but the trade it took to acquire him ripped open the Heat roster a fair bit. There may not be enough to truly build a contender worth worrying about now that Antetokounmpo calls South Beach home.
Giannis Antetokounmpo ending up in Los Angeles would have been the only better outcome
The only reason this is classifies as nearly the best-case scenario would be due to the folks in Los Angeles who wanted to see Antetokounmpo rocking purple and gold. For the sake of those people, there is some hesitation in calling this as good as it could have gotten.
Otherwise, the Lakers and their fans should be pretty pleased.
No doomsday scenario with Giannis joining the Oklahoma City Thunder. No annoying star duo with Antetokounmpo and Anthony Edwards. The now former Bucks superstar stays put in the Eastern Conference.
Not only that, but the fallout may leave the Heat without a true path to title contention in 2026-27. Giannis and Bam Adebayo are a solid duo, but far from enough to overcome just how depleted the roster could look around them when the dust settles for their first season together.
Considering the Lakers want to win now and put a championship team around Luka Doncic, all rivals are worth monitoring in their threat leavels. The barometer is hardly bouncing off the charts here.
All in all, this currently massive trade may quickly turn into a blip on the radar for the Lakers in the grand scheme of things. That is a good feeling to walk away with from a deal involving a two-time MVP and former NBA champion going to a team other than your own.
