With LeBron James on the cusp of what could turn into a legacy-boosting series against the Houston Rockets (if James ends up powering a series win or even coming close), Los Angeles Lakers fans are on the edge of their seats.

The absence of Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves has created a flurry of interesting mind games for both teams, but for the time being, the main narrative rests with James. The 41-year-old all-time great has almost no margin for error entering this series, but it still feels like he's capable of pulling off the near-impossible, especially given the Rockets' flaws.

But beneath the current LeBron storyline lies a deeper question about the next chapter of his career. James is a free agent following the season, and there's no guarantee that he'll re-sign with the Lakers, or with anyone, for that matter. On Monday, NBA insider Marc Stein listed LeBron alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kawhi Leonard as three megastars who could be moved this summer.

Marc Stein just reminded us of LeBron James' uncertain Lakers future

"There is a growing anticipation in numerous front offices, league sources say, that two or even all three of (James, Antetokounmpo and Leonard) could land with new teams next season," Stein reported (subscription required).

While there's been plenty of legit buzz about LeBron coming back to the Lakers in 2026-27, counteracting Stein's report (and plenty of others), no one can say for sure that James is going to retire in purple and gold.

This makes every single LeBron game from here on out particularly precious, especially now that we're in the postseason, where the Lakers' season could be over as soon as four games from now.

It's time to really appreciate every LeBron James Lakers game

Any Lakers fans privy to Stein's new report were gifted the latest reminder that LeBron's time with the Lakers is finite, and that the upcoming series with the Houston Rockets should be viewed with the utmost appreciation and feelings of grandiosity. Let's all face it -- LeBron is nearing the end of the road, even if he does decide to play next season. Every big playoff shot, every new chasedown block, could be one of the last of its type we ever see from James on an NBA floor.

For fans that have watched LeBron's entire 23-year career, the current reality hasn't quite set in. James has been so good for so long, that it almost feels impossible that there will soon come a time when he won't be in the league at all.

What feels slightly less impossible is the idea of LeBron wearing another uniform next season, which would pain plenty of Lakers fans. With that still being in play, Lakers Nation has all the more reason to lock in and throw its full support behind LeBron and Co. next week.
