It sounds like Los Angeles Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka is going to give LeBron James some much-needed downtime before talking with him about the future. Speaking to the press on Tuesday, less than 24 hours after the Lakers were eliminated from the playoffs, Pelinka made it clear that he'd love to have LeBron on the Lakers, but that he's focused on allowing James some breathing room with the decision.
"We probably haven't seen a player that has honored the game to the extent that he's honored the game," Pelinka said of LeBron. "He's given so much to his teammates, to this organization. The thing we want to do more than anything else is to honor him back [by giving him some time]."
Rob Pelinka suggests that he's on LeBron James' decision schedule
Interestingly, Pelinka suggested that LeBron might need some time to figure out whether or not he wants to retire. The feeling here was that Pelinka and the Lakers will allow James to come to them when he's ready to talk about his future, presumably after he's spent multiple weeks relaxing and recuperating from the season alongside his family.
Pelinka's words here were politically correct, no doubt, but that doesn't change the fact that the Lakers would benefit from LeBron making up his mind sooner rather than later. ESPN's Brian Windhorst has previously suggested that LA would really be in a difficult situation if LeBron's future wasn't decided by June 15, as the Lakers have so many other offseason moves to make, and they'd be unable to proceed with those moves without first knowing LeBron's status.
LeBron letting Lakers know decision early would help everyone
Indeed, as Pelinka embarks on a mission this summer to fix the Lakers' depth problem, he won't be able to fully dive into that mission without knowledge of LeBron's future. At the moment, James' future is completely unknown, at least to the public, and only the facts remain: LeBron is entering unrestricted free agency and, for all intents and purposes, may have played his last game as a Laker, and maybe even his last game in the NBA.
But Lakers fans who have been following LeBron's every move this season -- and the stories surrounding James -- harbor a strong suspicion that Bron will be back with the Lake Show in 2026-27, especially given the strong end to the regular season that LA had, as James, Luka Dončić, and Austin Reaves finally arrived at a working, winning chemistry.
