LeBron James embraced a massive role change this season, transforming into a third option for the Los Angeles Lakers behind Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. While this role switch wasn't cut and dried at the start of 2025-26, LeBron and the Lakers ultimately came to view it as the best path forward, and James left his ego at the door.

According to LeBron's veteran teammate on the Lakers, Rui Hachimura, James didn't allow his role adjustment to impact his status as an important vocal leader for the Lakers.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday after practice, Hachimura explained LeBron's value as a leader, which plenty of fans might take for granted, given James' myriad of other talents as a basketball player. "This year was very different for him, I think ... but I think he really respects the team ... he understands the roles on this team, and ... of course, he's been a leader ... that's why I think we got this (No. 4) seed," Hachimura said.

Lakers' LeBron James is a better vocal leader than people realize

After learning on the fly how to play third fiddle in the Lakers' offense, LeBron now finds himself thrust back into the primary option role as LA enters a challenging first-round series against the Houston Rockets.

Even given his long list of miraculous accomplishments in the NBA, LeBron would surely enhance his legacy if he were able to put the Lakers on his back and find a way to win this series. The Rockets are flawed, but they are also a rebounding juggernaut that will make things extremely difficult for a shorthanded LA team.

James has already acknowledged to the media this week the importance of the Lakers not getting bullied on the glass. Offensively, LA will operate as a LeBron-centric machine that hoists a ton of threes, hoping to push every game in this series into clutch time (last five minutes), where the Rockets have struggled all season long.

Led by LeBron, the experienced Lakers can defeat the Rockets

LA is confident that its experienced corps of vets -- James, Hachimura, and Marcus Smart -- have the IQ, toughness, and will to win required to overcome the Rockets in the final moments of a game.

Luke Kennard is the poster boy for LA's 3-point prowess, and he's already proven this season that he's unafraid of the big moment. At 41 years old, LeBron surely can't dominate this series alone. It'll take a full team effort from the Lakers to eliminate the Rockets. But that team effort will be led by a lion at the head of the pack, as it sounds like LeBron is an even better vocal leader in LA's locker room than many fans realize. As LA heads into battle on Saturday, it'll do so with the confidence that LeBron can and will lead them to an unlikely series victory.
