The Los Angeles Lakers, among other teams, are reportedly interested in Carl Landry. Here’s what he could bring to the table

It wasn’t long ago that Carl Landry was a semi-formidable power forward in the Association, and the Lakers, Houston Rockets, San Antonio Spurs and Indiana Pacers all seem to be keen to this very fact.

However, starting his career with the Rockets, where he averaged nearly 16 points and 6 rebounds in his prime, Landry has since fell off.

Bouncing from Houston to the Sacramento Kings, the New Orleans Pelicans, the Golden State Warriors, back to the Kings and finally landing on the Philadelphia 76ers, all of the movement should make it obvious which direction his value has been trending since 2010.

Despite all of this, Landry still has something that five teams including the Lakers believe to be worthy of a contract, even if only a small one.

Upon signing Yi Jianlian, Zach Auguste and deciding not to stretch/waive Nick Young, the team’s roster currently sits at 16 players, without those they’ve signed to training camp deals. Seeing how Landry was waived, LA wouldn’t have to trade for him, but it seems to signal once again that Young could be on the move.

On first glance the Lakers’ interest seems intriguing, until you realize that they have three young options at power forward filled with potential in Auguste, Larry Nance Jr and Julius Randle. That said, looking at those three names it becomes obvious why the Purple and Gold would go after Landry’s services.

Currently, every position on the Lakers is anchored by young members of the core and solid veteran leadership. At point guard you have vets Marcelo Huertas and Jose Calderon. At shooting guard, Lou Williams. Small forward, Luol Deng. Center, Timofey Mozgov.

Meaning the only position they lack a vet is the position they very well may need it the most, at power forward.

Last year, even being a small forward, Metta World Peace took this role, but seeing how the team has since moved on from him, it appears they see Landry as the perfect replacement.

This season the Lakers are in no position to make a push for the playoffs, and instead are attempting to build a strong foundation for a brighter tomorrow. A one-year rental of Carl Landry for minimal money could help them do just that.

Whether or not Landry would be interested in a big brother role at this point in his career remains to be seen.
